Our summer camps include cool tech classes and lots of fun activities on the UM campus.

Drop your child off at the YMCA in the morning before 9am. From there, they’ll be bused to the University of Montana Missoula campus. Your child will be bused back to the YMCA at the end of the day. Lunch provided by the Y.

Summer camp instruction begins at 9:30am and runs until 4:30pm from Monday to Thursday with Show-n-Tell at the end of the day on Thursday. Friday, students will enjoy a wide variety of activities on the UM campus including the planetarium, a hike to the M, lunch, a campus tour, games and more!

Dream Hackerz is a collaboration between Coding for Kids, the University of Montana Summer Office, and the Missoula Family YMCA.

SUMMER SESSION #1: June 23 - 27, 2025

  • Carnival Creations

    With Teacher Laura Whitehead
    Suggested Grades 3-5

    In this hands-on, creative STEAM class, students will explore the world of engineering and construction by designing and building simple machines—like the ones you'd find at a carnival! Each day they will dive into the science of levers, pulleys, ramps, circuits, and more, while using these machines to create fun, working models of miniature rides and events.

  • Cool Cat Coding

    With Teacher Scott Siebert
    Suggested Grades 3-5

    This class teaches students how to code through two different formats. In the morning students will build and code LEGO robots to help solve problems, such as carrying heavy weights, and how certain variables affect speed. The afternoon is spent on the program Scratch, where your children learn how to build games and get creative with design.

  • Logo Masters: Branding

    With Teacher Annette Wagner
    Suggested Grades 6-8

    Students will learn the basics of logo design and branding for products and businesses. They'll create thumbnails, roughs and comprehensives using pencil sketches, Gimp, and Canva as we move thru the design process. Color, typography and composition will be covered and applied that to business cards, t-shirts and other branding components.

    Suggested Grades 3-5

  • Digital Art Adventures

    With Teacher Nya Siebert
    Suggested Grades 3-5

    Students will dive into the world of art using digital technology. They will learn how to draw and color their creative ideas using a keyboard and mouse resulting in both a digital and printed portfolio.

  • Mobile Mapping Quest: Unleash Your Inner Explorer

    With Teachers Jessie Fischer / Erin Heiselmann
    Suggested Grades 6-8

    Explore mobile geographic information systems (GIS) using ArcGIS Online and Esri software applications! GIS specialists from the Bureau of Land Management will lead hands-on navigation, field data collection, and web-based cartography activities.

  • Sky Coders Club

    With Teacher Rachel Bemis
    Suggested Grades 3-5

    Children will learn how to work in small groups on drone inspired challenges and explore real-world problems. Children will learn how to operate a drone, code a drone and edit drone footage.

  • Vex IQ: Robots on the Move

    With Teacher Stephen Tucker
    Suggested Grades 6-8

    Welcome to the Robots On the Move Camp! In this camp, campers will explore VEX IQ by working in groups to build the Simple Clawbot and discover how to drive the robot using a controller to compete in the Robot Soccer Competition. They’ll learn about different types of manipulators to improve their robot’s ability to score goals. Then, they will learn about different gears and how gears in sequence can create more torque or speed to compete in a Tug of War tournament.

  • Electronics Lab: Build & Run

    With Teacher Jeff Arends
    Suggested Grades 6-8

    Students will learn to wire up projects using LEDs, IR sensors, buttons, LCDs, breadboards, and other components. Then they will run the code for the project using a Raspberry Pi single board computer. Concepts covered will include cyber-security, command line prompts, and simple Python programming.

  • eGaming

    With Teachers Cory McKague + Michael Cassens
    Suggested Grades 7+

    Games can create bridges, tell stories, and foster a place of belonging. In this class, we will build and play games to learn about design, interactivity, and how to interact effectively with one another through communication, collaboration, and a strong sense of teamwork.

Our mission is to inspire and empower K-12 learners through innovative, technology-driven, experiential learning experiences. Dream Hackerz, a collaborative initiative between the University of Montana Summer Office, the Missoula Family YMCA, and Coding for Kids, is dedicated to strengthening our community by providing students with engaging and educational summer classes fostering youth development and achievement.
